Telescopic intraocular lens

The IOL VIP telescopic intraocular lens implant offers an exciting new treatment for dry macular degeneration. IOL-VIP stands for "intraocular lens for visually impaired people".

In this procedure two lenses are placed in the eye. Following standard phacoemulsification , a concave intraocular lens is placed within the capsular bag, effectively acting as the ocular piece of a telescope; and a convex lens is placed in front of the iris in the anterior chamber, acting as the objective lens in a telescope. This system thus creates a Galilean Telescope in the eye, offering a magnification of 1.3x. By rotating the two lenses relative to each other a prismatic effect is also induced, allowing the patient to use an eccentric preferred retinal locus to optimize vision.

Indications include:
Dry age related macular degeneration (Dry AMD)
Stable, inactive or previously treated Wet (exudative) age related macular degeneration
Myopic macular degeneration
Macular holes
Inherited macular diseases such as Best's & Stargardt's dystrophy.
